PAX & IAN
P & I were married in Sebastopol, at a winery that surrounds a redwood grove. It sounds like something a set designer came up with. It isn’t.
We moved through the day with the usual madman-levels of film formats, letting things happen and - of course - gathering the evidence. It was a pleasure to witness, and an honor to have been invited to such a deeply Californian and wildly improbable setting. Dan O’Connell himself of O’Connell Vinyards would be glad to relay the details and passion he has for this amazing place and the winning grapes it yields. Most of all, a quick gander at Pax’s expressions below will leave you somehow mirroring the joy.
While it’s always a profound delight to document these celebrations entirely on film, this one really tickles the eye.
Enjoy.

a closer look at vine hill house
Vine Hill House is nestled in the charming town of Sebastopol, surrounded by vineyards, gardens, and a redwood grove that feels larger than life until you’re standing in it.
The property has been in Dan’s family since the 1930s. He grew up in the house on the property alongside his three sisters, and over time, the land evolved into what it is today: a place where people gather to celebrate life’s greatest moments.
Weddings have been hosted at Vine Hill House since 2000. The vineyard followed shortly after, planted in 2002, with its first vintage in 2006. By 2008, couples were drinking wine grown on the same land they were married on.
It’s the kind of place where history isn’t staged. It’s just there.

The vision for Vine HIll House
The grounds are well kept, but not overly controlled. Lawns, flower gardens, clusters of redwoods and firs, and then suddenly a wide, open view stretching across the valley toward Mount St. Helena.
It’s incredibly beautiful any time of day, and no wonder why it’s the perfect location for weddings in Sonoma county.
“The property was originally purchased by Dan’s family in the 30s. He grew up here with his three sisters. We later converted it into an event space in 2000. The vineyard came shortly after — planted in 2002 — and the first vintage was served to wedding couples in 2008. The rest is history.”
What Makes Vine Hill House Different
One of the things that sets Vine Hill House apart from other venues in Sonoma County (aside from it’s spectacular views) is how much is handled in-house.
They offer planning and coordination services, which allows the day to move more seamlessly from start to finish. There’s also more flexibility than many venues in the area when it comes to alcohol and event timing, which is a significant advantage.
The largest benefit of Vine Hill House’s planning and coordination services is a day that feels less restricted and more fluid.
“We offer in-house coordinating and planning, along with allowing alcohol and a later event time. Not a lot of venues in Sonoma County can do that.”
Ceremony Locations at Vine Hill House
There are a handful of locations on the property that naturally lend themselves to different parts of the day. Most often, ceremonies take place under the redwood grove and it’s easy to see why.
Ceremony locations:
Redwood grove. This is the most immersive location on the property - quiet, shaded, and slightly removed from everything else.
Gardens. The garden space opens up more and is surrounded by flowers, with vineyard views just beyond.
Lawn. With views stretching to the horizon, the scale of the landscape becomes part of the ceremony itself.
What is your personal favorite location on the property?
“The porch. It’s magical.”
What a Wedding Day Feels Like Here
The day starts early.
Around 8 AM, the couple arrives with their people and settles into the house for hair and makeup. The rest of the day steadily increases in activity from there.
Guests arrive in the late afternoon, usually between 3 and 4 PM depending on the season with the ceremony to follow shortly after.
Cocktail hour begins around 5. Dinner settles in around 6. Dancing starts as the light drops off, around 8 PM.
What does a typical wedding timeline
look like?
“Rehearsal the day before. The bride and her friends arrive around 8 AM for hair and makeup. The groom arrives mid-day. Guest arrival is between 3–4 PM, ceremony around 3:30–4:30 PM, cocktail hour around 5 PM, dinner around 6, and dancing around 8 PM.”
Guest Count, Capacity, and Flow
Vine Hill House accommodates up to 200 guests outdoors for ceremonies, cocktails, and receptions.
Everything happens outside, which if you love the outdoors, this is the perfect venue to host all your nearest and dearest while still being close to nature.
The property is thoughtfully planned and arranged to host the ceremony, cocktail hour, and dinner through different areas without feeling disconnected.
Amenities & What’s Included
This is where the Vine Hill House truly shines and does more of the heavy lifting than a traditional wedding venue.
Included with the space:
Dining tables, cocktail tables, chairs, and a dance floor
Full prep kitchen for catering
Market lighting, landscape lighting, and heaters
Setup and teardown handled by the venue
On-site coordination and day-of assistance
Parking staff and ADA-accessible restrooms
There’s also a guest house on site that’s available throughout the day, which becomes a natural anchor point for getting ready and regrouping.
Food, Alcohol, and Policies
Catering is selected from a preferred vendor list, with an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients and often incorporating produce from the surrounding vineyards and orchards.
Alcohol isBYO, with no corkage fees, though a portion of the wine served is typically sourced from O’Connell Vineyards.
Music is allowed both indoors and outdoors, with some volume considerations.
Weather & Seasonal Considerations
The wedding season runs from April through November, which covers most of Sonoma County’s most stable weather.
For spring and fall, a tent is installed on the property (April through early June, and again September through November). This allows the day to continue smoothly regardless of conditions, without losing the feeling of being connected to the outdoors.
It’s positioned beside the house and works as a built-in contingency without feeling like one.
What happens if the weather doesn’t cooperate?
“We tent an area to the left of the house from April through the first weekend of June. The tent comes down for summer and goes back up September through November.”
When to Get Married at Vine Hill House
The wedding season at Vine Hill House runs from April through November, with peak demand falling within those months.
Couples typically book their dates anywhere from 8 months to a year and a half in advance, especially for popular times of year.
Do you have a favorite moment from a wedding here?
“One that stands out is a couple who did their baby’s gender reveal during their cake cutting. It was a very special moment for both sides of the family.”
What Vine Hill House Is Meant to Feel Like
When I asked Jordan and Dan what they hope couples experience here, the answer is simple.
To feel surrounded by the people they chose to be there, by the landscape, and by the moment itself.
It’s rare to have everyone you know in one place at one time.
This is a place built for that.
What do you hope couples feel when they get married here?
“We hope they feel surrounded by the love of everyone they invited… it’s hard to get everyone you know in one place at once. We love showing people the beauty of West Sonoma County.”
