Emily & TomÁS

Emily and Tomás were married in her parent’s backyard on the waterfront of John’s Island, just outside Charleston.

They stood beneath a gnarled tree near the water to exchange vows. Most of the decorations were made by hand. In ways we would grow to learn about them, nothing felt borrowed from somewhere else. From the first time we met them, they were generous and trusting toward us, empowering us to do our work without over-explaining it. That kind of trust changes the way you photograph a wedding.

The speeches were sincerely impossible to stage. Their friends were just as welcoming as they were. Somewhere along the way, they stopped feeling like clients and became our friends.

We were grateful to document it.
